Why Get Involved?

You have real political power that you can add to the struggle to end hunger and homelessness. You can educate your community members and decision makers, change the conversation about stereotypes, improve policy, help service providers, and so much more. By joining in Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, you can come be part of something big!

Priority Event: Nationwide Food & Clothing Drive

Every location will hold its own assortment of events during their Awareness Week, but we strongly encourage every site to include a food and clothing drive in the mix. There’s a pressing demand for donations during the winter months, so your drive can meet an immediate need in the community. After the Week, we’ll add everything up and announce the total amount we were able to collect by working together.

Ending the Criminalization of Homelessness

Each year, we prioritize one advocacy issue as part of the Week’s message. This year, that issue is the criminalization of homelessness. Many cities have passed laws making it illegal for the homeless to sit, stand, sleep, or eat in public spaces. In some, it’s also illegal to distribute food to hungry individuals on the street. If your city has passed similar laws, take a little time during your Week to speak out.
