Fighting Hunger with Housing: Actions and Updates for Advocates
Housing instability is a root cause of hunger. The “rent eats first” and “heat or eat” are phrases anti-hunger stakeholders hear all too often. With families spending half or more of their incomes on shelter, it’s no wonder that tens of millions cannot afford to put food on the table.
In honor of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, join FRAC in:
Drawing attention to the intersections of hunger and housing instability
Exploring research from the Eviction Lab on the connections between evictions and decreased SNAP participation
Identifying key housing policies that promote equity and opportunities to engage

One Night Without A Home Sleep Out.
November 16th-17th, 2023
Do you want to make a difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness in Montgomery County? Will you join in with other dedicated individuals from across the region to raise awareness and to raise critical funds to help our neighbors who are living on the streets in our community? Will you give up your bed for one night in solidarity with those who spend every night without a home?
Join the “One Night Without a Home” Sleep Out. Raise critical funds to make sure that those experiencing homelessness and poverty are receiving basic needs care, social services, and health programs.
During the 2023 Point-in-Time Count of homelessness, which took place on January 24th, more than 350 individuals were found to be without a home in Montgomery County. The Norristown Hospitality Center has been working for over 30 years to provide Care, Comfort and Compassion to our neighbors who are living on the street. The Center’s unique approach combines basic needs services while also providing social services to support our neighbors who are most in need. The Center’s staff and volunteers are working every day to directly meet the needs of this vulnerable population.
Your action supports those in our community who are most in need. It’s impactful. It’s safe. It makes a real difference.
Who?
Anyone over the age of 18 is invited to join us in person for the “One Night Without a Home” Sleep Out. Those who are under 18, may register and participate virtually that their home, school, or faith community.
What?
The “One Night Without a Home” Sleep Out is an opportunity to show support for our neighbors who live on the street. There will be a rally, speakers, a prayer vigil, and a solidarity sleep-out. We will join together to create awareness and, through our peer-to-peer fundraising campaign, raise money that will directly impact the Norristown area homeless population.
When?
The event will begin at 7:00 PM on Thursday, November 16th. The event will conclude at 7:00 AM on Friday, November 17th.
Where?
The event will take place on the steps of the Montgomery County Courthouse (2 East Airy Street, Norristown, PA).
Once you are registered, information will be provided about the event and how to set up a peer-to-peer fundraising account to raise awareness and funds to support those who are experiencing homelessness.

Depaul USA - Los Angeles
Depaul USA - Los Angeles
2337 S. Figueroa St.

Depaul USA is a national homeless services nonprofit organization operating in ten major cities to address the immediate homelessness crises by providing stable and safe housing. In addition, we are one of the only national organizations spotlighting that an estimated 68,000 college-aged students are currently experiencing homelessness in the United States.
To raise awareness for this growing crisis, this Fall, we will be holding a series of music & wellness festivals called QuietFest on or near college campuses that will also serve as fundraisers to support these efforts.
Our first series of events will occur in Saint Louis, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York. The festival in Los Angeles is on Saturday, November 11th, on the grounds of St. Vincent School, a few blocks from the USC campus. It will take place from 4 pm to 9 pm. The festival’s headliner will be a large-scale silent disco with additional on-site activities such as yoga, live music, meditation, food activations, raffles, etc. The wellness portion of the event will include workshops + vendors across the spectrum of the local wellness community. Each city’s event will have its own unique schedule and local flavor.
ABOUT DEPAUL - LOS ANGELES
Depaul USA - Los Angeles is a non-profit assisting unhoused and housing-insecure individuals. We operate Casa Milagrosa, a day resource center. Through radical hospitality, we provide a warm and welcoming refuge to homeless people near MacArthur Park. Up to 150 men and women visit daily to receive services that help them overcome their situation.
Our next project in Los Angeles is our Dax program. The Dax program addresses college students’ immediate homelessness crises by providing stable and safe housing. It provides students with various services that support a successful path toward continuing and completing their studies. Services include housing, case management, counseling referrals, transportation, food stipends, textbook assistance, job training, financial literacy, and more.
