The DEI Task Force Committee volunteered at the Greater Lansing Food Bank. We prepared Weekend Survival Kit (WSK) Backpacks for local students who are experiencing food insecurities. The backpacks or children’s emergency food kits are bags of food that slip discreetly into a child’s backpack and are intended to meet the nutritional needs of children during non-school hours, specifically over the weekends or longer breaks. The program focuses on children who receive free or reduced-price meals during the school day. Each kit contains non-perishable food that is easy for a child to prepare

Every person deserves a place to feel safe, supported, and inspired—a place where their needs are met, their potential is recognized, and their dreams are nurtured. At Betterment Enterprises, we’re creating that place for our community. It’s called the Collaborative Innovation Center (CIC), and it will be the cornerstone of a movement to solve hunger, homelessness, and systemic inequality.

This November, during Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, we’re inviting you to join us in the Collaborative Innovation Campaign. Together, we will raise funds to bring the CIC to life—a space where every individual in our community has access to food, shelter, opportunity, and the tools to create a brighter future.

The CIC will not just address symptoms; it will tackle the root causes of these challenges. By combining essential services with creative innovation, this facility will be a catalyst for transformation. It will empower individuals to meet their basic needs, explore their potential, and contribute to solving some of the world’s most pressing issues.

During this campaign, we are working other local community businesses like 7 Monks and more to raise $5 million to fund the creation of the CIC. Every dollar raised will directly contribute to building a space that ensures no one in our community is left behind.

We supported a local homeless shelter, Breaking Bread Community in Delaware County, PA. Tuesday and Wednesday of the week, the students (and some staff) volunteered to provide legal information and education, and provided dinner for the shelter residents those nights. After dinner and the program, we played games with the residents. On Wednesday, we had a lunch and learn for scholarly discussion on the state of criminalization of homelessness in light of Grants Pass decision (which our law students also worked on that case in the spring.) On Saturday, 10 law students will partner with LASP and attorneys from Troutman Pepper to provide criminal and civil pro bono legal services to shelter residences at Breaking Bread and the unhoused. We had a donation drive all week where the law school community could donate items as requested by the shelter, and there is a Target wish list that will remain open for donations to the shelter.
