We are planning the Willamette Valley Hunger Challenge – A Community Food Insecurity Experience! Many organizations across the Willamette Valley who work to alleviate hunger, food insecurity, and its root causes will be participating by encouraging community members to take the challenge.

Our hope is that participants will gain a better understanding of and empathy for the difficult choices many families face concerning food, learn more about food insecurity, hunger, and its root causes, and discover how our community is working together to find solutions. There are two Challenge options with no cost to participate.

The Budget Option will attempt to highlight what it is like to eat on the maximum SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefit – approximately $45 a week, or $6.38 a day for a single person. The purpose is not to match the actuality of food insecurity, but to instead better understand the experience of living on a tight food budget and how that may change their life both physically and psychologically.

For the Fasting Option, participants will choose a healthy length of time to fast, and during that time, focus their thoughts on those in our community who are facing food insecurity and contemplate how to help.

Participants will register for their chosen commitment online at www.willamettehungerchallenge.org
